Atelier Ping Jiang | EID Arch Attended the CTBUH 2023 Global Conference and Delivered a Speech during the Global Awards Event
The 2023 CTBUH Global Conference, organized by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH), was held from October 16 to 21 in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. As the recipient of the 2023 CTBUH Global Award for Excellence in Tall Buildings in Asia, EID Arch's project, Shimao Hangzhou Riverfront Towers, was showcased at the conference. EID Arch architect Lisa Wellman, representing the studio and the project owner, delivered a presentation titled "Shimao Hangzhou Riverfront Towers – New Urban Node for Hangzhou", sharing insights and engaging with industry professionals.
The theme of this year's conference was "Humanizing High Density — People, Nature & the Urban Realm". It focused on issues of livability in the context of future cities and explored solutions to the following challenges: the shape of livable density, housing equity, creating better social spaces, finding a balance with nature, reducing carbon emissions, mitigating the impacts of climate change, and achieving a balance that suits local environmental and cultural conditions during development.
At the CTBUH Annual Global Awards Ceremony, the Shimao Hangzhou Riverfront Tower project was awarded the Award of Excellence in the category of Best Tall Building, Asia. As part of the 2023 CTBUH International Conference, the Global Awards program aims to recognize outstanding contributions to the advancement of tall buildings and urban environments. The awards are evaluated by different juries and are presented in over ten categories. They are considered the global authority in recognizing the "World’s Best Buildings" and "Best Buildings by Continent," often referred to as the "Oscars of the Tall Building Industry."
Unlike traditional high-density urban complexes that are primarily driven by commercial purposes, the Shimao Hangzhou Riverfront Tower actively explores and experiments with a new model for urban complexes, aiming to optimize public, citizen-oriented open spaces. The design is public-space-driven, skillfully integrating Hangzhou’s natural and cultural heritage with the design of super-tall buildings. By incorporating a flexible physical framework and green, smart office spaces, the tower creates a highly recognizable urban gateway with an elegant, understated architectural form and an open, welcoming attitude.
